Matthew 19:1-15
Divorce, a touchy and sometimes difficult subject today, as well as, thousands of years ago when the Pharisees questioned Jesus about the matter. Once again, I am no expert by any means, but I think that Jesus was saying that marriage was created by God, it is when a man and woman become one, it was intended to be until death and no one can dispute these biblical facts. However, it can become tainted and impossible to salvage if both the man and woman are not willing to follow the leading of God. Marriage is hard and it does involve sacrifice, but doesn’t everything that’s worth something have a cost? I just think that today people get a divorce without really trying to work things out. Divorce may seem to be the easiest way out but in reality it is hard on every person involved and God knows that---think about it, everything that God designed was perfect including marriage, so isn’t he just protecting us from heartache when he designed marriage to last until death. Is it unforgivable, of course not, but I just think that today many people don’t take marriage as serious as it needs to be taken. I have actually heard people say well if this don’t work out we’ll just get a divorce and move on. Really? Should it be that simple? I think so many times we forget what a beautiful creation marriage is, where two people are joined for life, two people that love each other unconditionally. I do have to say that while my marriage has been far from perfect, over the last 17 years my husband and I have never seriously discussed divorce. That is not a testament to either of us, but to Jesus Christ who we have many times put our trust in when we did not know what to do. You know we will never be able to love our wife or our husband like God intended if we never accept the salvation that is offered to us through Jesus Christ. It is only through him that we can truly know how to love and be loved.
I find it interesting that immediately after divorce is discussed that scripture moves on to the importance of little children in the kingdom of heaven. After all, the greatest gift that we get through marriage is children. As I read these scriptures I can just picture the love of Jesus as he pours it out upon these children that are brought to him. How he must have not only told, but motioned to his disciples to hold on and let me just love on these precious children. Isn’t that what he just wants to do to us, isn’t that what we long for from him….just his love? Isn’t love what is the core of our being? When everything is said and done what is left….love! I think that is why we are to be like children because children allow God to pour his love out upon them without any expectation. I can’t help but think about all the disasters that have happened over the last few years and the resilience of God’s people. I have heard testimony of great loss, but then they refer back to family, friends, and strangers that they found great comfort in. We can loose everything we have, but having someone’s love can make the greatest loss bearable. We can never forget that no matter our circumstance, no matter our loss, we have the greatest love of all when we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. Just as he loved on those children, he will pour his love down upon us and that love will make us whole.
